Gameplay
This Wingspan Expansion is a standalone Duet version, aimed at being played with two players. Besides this socalled ‘Duet’ mode, there is also a 6/7 player variant included and a bunch of new bird cards which can be mixed with the original game.
Duet Mode
In this variant, the players only need this game to play.
Instead of the regular end of round goals, players now play a token on the new main board each time they played a bird card and the end of round goals are focussed at the situation of this board.
6/7 flock mode
In this mode, you need need to add the base game to be able to play with up to 7 players.
Players will be split to two groups playing simultaneously, sharing the bird feeder and the three birds in the open pool.
New cards with new push your luck elements in it, often giving something to the other players as well
Thoughts
👍 the new bird cards are beautiful again and add enough newness with the push your luck element that works really well.
👍 The duet mode im particularly very enthusiastic about. The game gets a fresh new feel to it by focussing on something different each round, the game becomes entirely different than the normal game and I like this a lot!
👍 the components are great. I like how the boards are two sided and new artwork is added on one of the sides
👍➖ Im not superexcited about flock mode. It works, but can also be done when combining two games of wingspan
➖ I think it’s a pity the duet mode doesn’t scale to multiple player modes
A copy of this game was provided to me by 999 Games for the purpose of writing this review. My opinion however remains my own.
